o Sam Hardy has been named a National Merit Scholar and has received the Presidential Merit Scholarship from the University of Alabama where he will attend in the fall.
o The PA Football News All-Academic Team includes 10 Palmyra students:
o Gold (3.8-4.0) Billy Beecher, Nick Slobozien, Wyatt Yasinski
o Silver (3.5-3.79) Will Haus, Gavin Hermanson, Austin Taylor, Preston Bare
o Bronze (3.0-3.4) Andrew Latchford, Jon Hicks, Dino Faiola
o Mrs. Melanie Wiscount was named as one of 50 teacher Fellows nationwide for the Discovery Education Siemens Institute. This will be a multiple-day professional development opportunity held in Washington, DC this summer.
o Mrs. Elaine Stine, Teacher Leader, was a co-presenter for a Reading Recovery webinar, along with Dr. Janet Bufalino the RR Regional Coordinator. They presented current brain research related to reading.
o Mr. Zach Fletcher, HS English Language Arts teacher, has been accepted as a member of the Keystone Exam Assessment Projects Development task force for the Composition Keystone.
Getting Out and About:
o Read Whose Shoes? A Shoe for Every Job by Stephen R. Swinburne to 3-5 year old children at U-Gro Day Care as part of the “PA One Book, Every Young Child” campaign which was coordinated by IU13.
o Attended Lebanon CTC’s annual Occupational Advisory Committee Dinner which was completely cooked or baked and served by CTC students. The food was amazingly delicious and the students conducted themselves in a very professional manner. The following Palmyra students participated:

o Tyler Hetrick, Shawn Purcell (Culinary Arts)
o Attended 2011 IU13 Partnership Convention held at Lampeter Elementary School. Dr. Jon Landis was the guest speaker who spoke about using technology and held-hand devices to enhance learning for students. It was a natural follow-up from our summer retreat and on-going efforts.
o Attended the MS Musical, Mirror Image, which was extremely well done and a perfect play for MS students.
o Attended the HS Musical, The Music Man, which was excellent from start to finish! In fact, here is part of a message I received from someone who has been involved with our musicals for 7 years: “This year’s musical was above and beyond the best musical I have ever seen produced here at Palmyra… During my time here, I have worked with many different directors and none of them has been as professional, caring, well organized, talented, and fun to work with as this year’s director Jasmine Bucher. At all times, she displayed the ability to handle all situations with grace and a wealth of knowledge.”
o Attended a breakfast session at Elizabethtown College at the invitation of Dr. Kathy Blouch. Mr. David Levin, founder of the KIPP Schools and highlighted in the movie Waiting for Superman, spoke in an informal, small group. Again, his message underscored the message from a webinar that many of our administrators attended from Apple on project-based learning.
Also:
o Tuesday Palmyra participated in the annual FEMA safety drill. Every other year is a bit more comprehensive and this year was one of those years. Gary Zellner and Daryl Reisinger coordinated the efforts at this end. Our biggest risk for disaster is TMI so our preparation for such an accident was the focus.
o Leadership from school districts in Lebanon county have been involved in political meetings with:
o Sen. Mike Folmer (second one)
o Lebanon Chamber of Commerce luncheon with Gov. Corbett
o Rep. Mauree Gingrich and Rep. RoseMarie Swanger, here at our district office this afternoon
The meetings have served as opportunities for us to learn some of their thinking and share our ideas and concerns.
