Semester 1 HS
Parent-Teacher Conferences:
This year, 244 conferences were held. 72% of the
teachers held anywhere from 1-13 conferences with parents. Of the 28% who did
not have any conferences, all were related arts, part-time in the building, or
in positions where they may have held meetings already (ESL or IEP).
NY
Times Bestselling Author Visit to HS:
Ellen Hopkins spoke to an auditorium full of HS
students. Ms. Hopkins has written adolescent literature titles such as Crank, Impulse, and Burned. She
wrote her first novel loosely based on the story of her daughter who was
addicted to Crystal Meth. Many of our students had read her books, and they
asked very appropriate yet pointed questions of her writing and personal
experiences. The assembly was free and possible because teacher Ms. Andrea
Wagner applied to a contest to have her visit. As Ms. Hopkins stated, her books
do not end all tied up in pretty packages.
Professional
Development:
October 9 was a professional development day for
teachers. The vast majority of teachers took advantage of an array of offerings
this summer so Tuesday was a ‘trade day’ for all but a handful of our teachers.
Out and About:
I
joined the Lebanon County guidance representatives along with CTC leadership
for a visit to I Auman Machine Company. The purpose was for guidance staff to
understand the machine shop career and encourage that pathway to students. My
take-away key points include:
o
This is an excellent career path that pays well and
provides young people with a fine life style.
o
Most jobs in this profession do not require a college
degree, however, tuition reimbursement is often available.
o
Basic skills are to be taken seriously by all students
since math through trigonometry and strong communication skills are required
for the related jobs.
o
Women as well as men can do these jobs.
Division
Reports:
Elementary:
o
September was a
busy time welcoming students back to school, establishing routines, and
assessing student levels.
o
Grade level teams
at each building met to review student data and develop action plans to support
learning. Using this information,
targeted students in grades 1-5 were assigned to intervention groups in order
to provide support or enrichment. Staff
will continue to monitor student progress and assess all students’ needs,
adjusting their support as necessary.
Middle
School:
·
Ms. Gabe Ford shared her story of
being bullied during assemblies with our MS and upper elementary students. Her
message was strong and heard by many students.
·
10 students randomly won our
positive incentive for our 4C program, earning them the pleasure of having
lunch with both principals. The winners were: Ellie Keck, Alexis Smith,
Connor Groves-Smith, Scott Collier, Alajah Rhette, Sammy Kantorczyk, Adie
Ramierez, Hannah Strayer, Devin Gearhart, Jacob Murphy.
·
7th grade teams are going to Camp
Swatara this week to get a preview of Outdoor Education.
·
Approximately 450 students attended
the first Kid’s Night Out. Students
enjoyed games, dancing, & food.
·
A kick-off assembly initiated the magazine
fundraiser. Please consider making a purchase if a student asks.
